It is narrated from Ma’rur that we passed by Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw that he was wearing an ordinary garment while his slave was wearing a (similar) suit. We said: If you took this suit from the slave and gave him some other clothes, it would make a matching set for you. He said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “These are your brothers whom Allah has placed under your authority, so whoever has his brother under him should feed him what he himself eats, and clothe him with what he himself wears. And do not burden them with work that overpowers them, and if you do burden them beyond their capacity, then help them.”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: From these hadiths, we learn that laborers, employees, and slaves, etc., are also human beings and possess all human weaknesses; therefore, while treating them kindly, one should not place upon them a burden greater than they can bear. If there arises an emergency situation in which there is more work, then one should assist them oneself so that they feel a sense of compassion and do not consider themselves insignificant. In this way, feelings of goodwill will also be generated in their hearts.
