It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him), he says: I have witnessed that era of the Muslims when a man, upon waking up in the morning, would say: O people of the house! O family members! Take care of your orphan and do not fall short in serving him. O people of the house! Take care of your needy one, and O people of the house! O family members! Look after your neighbor and take care of him. Your good people are departing quickly, and you are becoming religiously weaker every day. (The narrator says) And I have also heard them saying: And today, if you wish to see a sinner, you can see one who is spending thirty thousand (in sins) and heading towards Hell. What is wrong with this person? May Allah destroy him, he has sold his share that he could have received from Allah (in the form of reward) for the price of a goat (a trivial price), that is, he wasted it in such a minor worldly pleasure. And if you wish to see a person who has spent his entire harvest (i.e., all his wealth) in the way of Satan and wasted it, such a person can also be seen; neither does his conscience reproach him, nor is there anyone among the people to bring him to the right path.
