Abu Atiyyah, a freed slave of us, said: Malik bin al-Huwairith came to this place of prayer of ours, and the iqamah for prayer was called. We said to him: Come forward and lead the prayer. He said to us: Put one of your own men forward to lead you in prayer. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: If anyone visits people, he should not lead them in prayer, but some person of them should lead the prayer.

1؎: If, with happiness and consent, the people wish to appoint the visitor as the imam, and he is also deserving of leading the prayer, then it is permissible for him to become the imam, because in one narration of Abu Mas‘ud there is the addition of «إلا بإذنه».
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
596. Commentary: The fundamental ruling is indeed as stated, and its wisdom is clear: the local imam and congregants are well aware of each other's habits and circumstances, whereas a visitor is generally not, and this could cause difficulty for the congregants. However, if they desire it and the imam grants permission, then without doubt it is permissible.
