Narrated Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah: A woman used to perform circumcision in Madina. The Prophet ﷺ said to her: Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband. Abu Dawud said: It has been transmitted by Ubaid Allah bin Amr from Abd al-Malik to the same effect through a different chain. Abu Dawud said: It is not a strong tradition. It has been transmitted in mursal form (missing the link of the Companions) Abu Dawud said: Muhammad bin Hasan is obscure, and this tradition is weak.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊
Allamah al-Albani rahimahullah has declared this hadith to be authentic and has stated that female circumcision was a well-known practice among the Salaf.
However, those who have denied it are only those who have no knowledge regarding it.
➋ Among the Arabs and in the Maghreb, it is well known that they used to perform circumcision on girls as well, and the aforementioned hadith also pertains to female circumcision—that the protruding flesh on the private part should be removed, but it should not be cut deeply. And the scholars have said that since there is a natural difference between the women of the East and the West, therefore, among the women of the East, there is no need for it.
That is why this practice is not well known in those regions.
➌ From this, it becomes clear that this practice is not obligatory for women; however, where there is a perceived need for it or where it is customary, it may be practiced there.
