Zakat on Withdrawn GP Fund During Service Explained

❖ Zakat Ruling on Withdrawn GP Fund During Employment

Question:
Government employees sometimes withdraw amounts from their General Provident Fund (GP Fund) during their service to meet personal needs. Is Zakat obligatory on such withdrawn amounts?

❖ Answer by Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi ḥafiẓahullāh:

✔ If the withdrawn GP Fund amount has already been spent to fulfill a need, then:

❌ Zakat is not obligatory on that amount.

✔ Only the remaining balance from the withdrawn fund will be subject to Zakat, provided it meets the nisab and a lunar year passes over it.

❖ Summary:

No Zakat on the amount that has been used/spent.
Zakat applies only to the leftover amount, if it:
  ① Reaches nisab, and
② Remains in possession for a full lunar year.
