Zakat and Qurbani: Rules for Sending to Another City Within a Country

Zakat and Qurbani: Sending to Another City Within the Same Country

Islam emphasizes local charity and community support. However, questions often arise regarding whether Zakat or Qurbani can be transferred from one city to another within the same country. Here’s a formal breakdown of the Islamic guidelines on this issue:

❖ Zakat Transfer Between Cities

Islamic teachings prioritize distributing Zakat to the poor and needy in the area where it was collected. The principle is rooted in fostering local welfare and minimizing disparity among community members.

However, transferring Zakat to another city may be allowed in certain exceptional cases:

❶ If there are no eligible recipients in the donor’s locality.

❷ If the intended recipients in another city are relatives of the donor and are more in need.

❸ If the need in the other city is more pressing, such as due to natural disaster or famine.

Despite these allowances, scholars advise that, in general circumstances, Zakat should not be routinely transferred out of the local area without valid justification.

❖ Qurbani in a Different City

Qurbani, or sacrifice during Eid al-Adha, ideally should be performed by the individual or in their presence to fulfill the spiritual and ritualistic aspects of the act. However, if necessary, it is permissible to appoint someone in another city to perform it on one’s behalf.

This may be due to:

❶ Personal inability to perform the act.

❷ Desire to benefit those in areas with greater need.

When delegating Qurbani to another city, the following conditions must be met:

✔ The animal must be slaughtered within the days of Eid.

✔ The meat should be distributed properly, prioritizing the poor and needy.

Conclusion

In essence:

✔ Zakat should primarily be given locally unless justified by need or family connection.

✔ Qurbani can be performed in another city through a trustworthy representative if necessary.

These guidelines help maintain the spirit of Islamic charity—supporting both immediate community welfare and broader humanitarian needs.
