You Are From Me

❀ Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him):

"You are from me, and I am from you."

[Sahih al-Bukhari: 4251]

↰ This Hadith establishes the virtue and excellence of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). However, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is not unique in this virtue, as several other Companions also share in it, as seen in the following examples:

➊ Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ashari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

"When the Ash'ari tribe runs out of supplies during a battle or when their family members face a shortage of food while residing in Madinah, they gather whatever they have in a single cloth and then divide it equally among themselves in one container. They are from me, and I am from them."

[Sahih al-Bukhari: 2486, Sahih Muslim: 2500]

➋ Sayyiduna Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him), who displayed courage and bravery in a battle, killing seven disbelievers before being martyred, was described by the Prophet (peace be upon him) as:

"He is from me, and I am from him. He is from me, and I am from him."

[Sahih Muslim: 2472]

➌ Sayyiduna Ya'la bin Murrah al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

"Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) is from me, and I am from him."

[Musnad Ahmad: 172/4, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad by Al-Bukhari: 364, Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 3775, and he said: Hasan, Sunan Ibn Majah: 144, Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir by Al-Tabarani: 274/22, Hadith: 702, Al-Mustadrak by Al-Hakim: 194/3, Hadith: 4820, and its chain is Hasan]

This Hadith has been declared "Sahih" by Imam Ibn Hibban [6971] and "Sahih al-Isnad" by Imam Hakim, and Hafiz Dhahabi also regarded it as "Sahih."

❀ In another narration, the words Hussain is from me, and I am from Hussain are also mentioned.

Conclusion:

The association of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with someone, and vice versa, signifies a great virtue. However, this virtue is shared by several Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) apart from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Therefore, using this to justify Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as the immediate successor (Khalifah Bilafasl) is not beneficial.
