❖ Obligation of Wudu for Prayer and Its Shar‘i Evidences ❖
✍ Compiled by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
Performing wudu (ablution) is a mandatory condition for the validity of every type of prayer — whether it be:
➤ Farḍ (Obligatory) Prayer
➤ Nafl (Voluntary) Prayer
➤ Funeral (Janāzah) Prayer
➤ Any other Ṣalāh
Without wudu, no prayer is acceptable to Allah ﷻ.
Narration:
Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out from the lavatory and food was brought to him. We asked: ‘Shall we not bring water for you to perform wudu?’ He ﷺ replied:
❝I have only been commanded to perform wudu when I intend to pray.❞
[Abū Dāwūd: al-Aṭʿimah, Bāb Ghasl al-Yadayn ʿinda al-Ṭaʿām: 3760]
✔ This narration clearly establishes that wudu is obligatory only for ṣalāh, not for eating, drinking, or other general activities.
Narration:
Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
❝The prayer of one who does not have wudu is not accepted, nor is charity from ill-gotten wealth accepted.❞
[Muslim: 224]
✔ This ḥadīth proves that even a single unit (rakʿah) of prayer without valid wudu is invalid in the sight of Allah ﷻ.
Narration:
Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
❝If one of you breaks his wudu, Allah does not accept his prayer until he performs wudu again.❞
[Bukhārī: 6954; Muslim: 224]
✔ Even if a person forgets their state of purity, they must renew their wudu before attempting any form of ṣalāh.
Prayer without wudu is:
✘ Invalid
✘ Unacceptable
✘ Rejected by Allah ﷻ
Hence, wudu is a strict prerequisite for entering into prayer. Every believer must uphold this foundational requirement.
