✦ Worldly Glamour vs. True Success in the Hereafter ✦
The suicide of a young person is always a heartbreaking tragedy, especially when the individual departs from this world without embracing Islam. It is natural to feel sorrow in such cases, as one is overcome with thoughts like:
“If only he had not taken his life… If only he had repented… If only he had found the light of Islam…”
According to the Qur'an, supplicating for the forgiveness of one who dies as a non-Muslim is not permissible. Islam firmly teaches that salvation lies solely in accepting the truth of Islam.
"And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter, he will be among the losers."
(Surah Aal-e-Imran: 85)
To pray for the forgiveness of someone who did not accept Islam is to contradict the truthfulness of Islam. However, the final judgment regarding anyone’s fate is entirely in the hands of Allah, whose mercy is vast and whose knowledge is perfect and all-encompassing.
Great prophets like Ibrahim (AS) and Isa (AS) also did not pray for the forgiveness of disbelievers. Instead, they entrusted their fate to Allah alone.
This should also be our approach—to refrain from judgment and not utter hurtful words about the deceased, especially if it causes pain to their loved ones.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Do not speak ill of the dead, for they have reached what they sent forth."
(Sunan Abi Dawood, Kitab al-Adab, Hadith No. 4900)
These tragic moments are a reminder and warning for us:
✔ Let not the glitter of the world distract us from our ultimate purpose.
✔ True success lies in the Hereafter, and true failure is failure in the Hereafter.
✔ The heart finds real peace only in the remembrance of Allah.
"Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace."
(Surah Ar-Ra’d: 28)
May Allah protect us from the trials and delusions of this world, and may He grant us success in the Hereafter.
Ameen.
