Women Attending Eid Prayers Outside the Home

Fatwa by: Shaykh Ibn Jibreen (حفظه الله)

Question:

Is it permissible for women to go outside the home to attend Eid prayers?

Answer:
It is legislated for women to go outside their homes to perform the Eid prayers. They should be particularly encouraged to do so. Umm ʿAṭiyyah (رضي الله عنها) stated that “we were commanded to go out for the Eid prayers, even young virgins and menstruating women were commanded to go.” They should join the Muslims in the takbīrāt and participate in their supplications, hoping for the blessings and goodness of that day. In one narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would take young virgins, veiled women, and menstruating women out for the Eid prayers. As for menstruating women, they would stay apart from the prayer area while still participating in the goodness and the Muslims’ supplications.

Umm ʿAṭiyyah (رضي الله عنها) asked: “O Messenger of Allah, what if one of us does not have a cloak?” He ﷺ replied: “Her sister should clothe her in her own cloak.”

It is important to note that when going out for the Eid prayers, women must avoid wearing perfume and any adornments that may lead to temptation. They should attend with utmost simplicity, maintaining separation from men.

And Allah knows best.
