❓ Question

What is the wisdom behind the prohibition of marrying two sisters at the same time?

✔ Answer

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

Often, such questions are raised merely to create objections, and they bring no real benefit. If a Muslim asks such a question, he should refrain from it. If an atheist asks, he must first accept Islam as truth, then asking about its wisdom becomes meaningful. For someone who does not even believe in Islam, inquiring about its wisdom is nothing but a waste of his and others’ time.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that behind this prohibition lies a profound wisdom.

◈ The Real Reason and Wisdom

❀ In most cases, co-wives (sawākin) do not live in harmony.

❀ At times, opposition and conflict escalate severely.

❀ Sometimes, one co-wife even seeks to harm the other.

❀ Islam does not approve of such enmity, discord, and severing of ties.

❀ Hence, Islam has prohibited marrying two sisters simultaneously.

Even if outwardly they may not harm one another, still:

❀ Their hearts often fill with resentment and hatred against each other.

❀ Such a state is disliked in Islam, as it leads to the breaking of family ties.

❀ And severing kinship is considered a major sin in Islam.

Hadhā mā ʿindī, wallāhu aʿlam bis-ṣawāb.
