❖ Ruling on Wiping Over Double Socks (Masḥ) in Wudū’ ❖
If a person is wearing double socks, which pair should be wiped over during wudū’? The inner one or the outer?
Shaykh Qamar Hasan (حفظه الله)
✔ It is permissible and sufficient to wipe over the outer socks in case of double layering.
✔ Removing the outer socks does not invalidate wudū’, as long as the inner socks remain on.
✔ The wudū’ remains valid within the allowed time frame for masḥ.
Question:
If a person is wearing double socks, which pair should be wiped over during wudū’? The inner one or the outer?
✔ Answer by:
Shaykh Qamar Hasan (حفظه الله)
➤ Ruling: Wipe Over the Outer Socks
- If double socks are worn, it is sufficient and valid to wipe over the outer socks only.
- Wiping over the outer layer is counted as wiping over both, and the wudū’ is valid.
Additional Clarification:
- The outer socks are the visible and accessible layer, which is considered in practical use—thus, wiping over them is legally sufficient.
- If a person removes the outer socks, wudū’ remains valid, provided that:
- The inner socks are still worn, and
- The masḥ duration (time limit) has not expired.
Summary:
✔ It is permissible and sufficient to wipe over the outer socks in case of double layering.
✔ Removing the outer socks does not invalidate wudū’, as long as the inner socks remain on.
✔ The wudū’ remains valid within the allowed time frame for masḥ.
