Fatwa by: Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Is it permissible to wipe over shoes in wudu? Specifically, what is the ruling on ankle-high shoes (الي الكعبين)? How should one perform masḥ (wiping) over such shoes?

❖ Answer:

Ankle-high shoes (الي الكعبين) take the same ruling as khuffayn (leather socks) in Islamic jurisprudence.

➊ Condition for Validity of Masḥ:

  • If the shoes are worn while in a state of wudu’,
then wiping over them is permissible.

➋ Method of Performing Masḥ:

  • One must wipe the upper part of the shoes only.
  • It is not necessary to wipe the bottom or sides of the shoes.

❖ Conclusion:

✔ It is permissible to wipe over ankle-high shoes, provided they are worn after performing wudu’.
✔ These shoes are treated like khuffayn in this regard.
✔ The masḥ is done on the upper surface only, as per authentic Sunnah.
