Wiping Duration When a Resident Becomes a Traveler After Starting Wiping

Duration of Wiping Over Socks During Travel: Ruling for One Who Becomes a Traveler After Starting as a Resident

Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

Question:

If a resident starts wiping over socks and then begins a journey, which duration should he follow — the resident’s or the traveler’s?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

If a person begins wiping over socks while in a state of residence, and later sets out on a journey, then according to the stronger and more correct opinion, he should follow the traveler’s duration for wiping.

Details:

◈ Some scholars have opined that if someone wipes over socks while in residence and then travels, he should only wipe for the resident’s duration — one day and one night.

◈ However, the preferred opinion is that since the person had not yet completed his wiping duration, and during that time he set out on a journey, he falls under the category of travelers — who are allowed to wipe for three days and three nights.

◈ It is narrated regarding Imām Aḥmad رحمه الله that in the beginning he held the view that such a person should follow the resident’s duration, but later he retracted and adopted the opinion that the traveler’s duration applies.

Conclusion:

If a resident starts wiping over socks and then embarks on a journey, it is permissible for him to wipe for three days and three nights — the duration allowed for travelers.
