Will the Shia Be With Ahl al-Bayt on the Day of Judgment Due to Their Claimed Love?
Source: Fatāwā Amanpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amanpuri
❖ Question:
Sayyidunā Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه narrated:
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about the Hour. He said: “What have you prepared for it?” The man replied: “Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “You will be with those whom you love.”
Anas رضي الله عنه said: “Nothing made us happier than this statement. I love the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar, and I hope that due to my love for them I will be with them, even if my deeds are not like theirs.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3688; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2639)
The objection: The Rāfiḍah (Shia) claim to love ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ, and Ahl al-Bayt. So will they be with them on the Day of Judgment?
❖ Answer:
The love mentioned in the ḥadīth refers to Sharʿī love — love as defined and accepted by the Sharīʿah.
- The Rāfiḍah’s claimed love for ʿAlī رضي الله عنه is not true Sharʿī love.
- Genuine love requires obedience and following the beloved.
- The Christians claimed love for ʿĪsā عليه السلام but exaggerated to the point of calling him “the son of Allah.” Was that true love? Certainly not.
Similarly, the Shia:
- Claim love for ʿAlī رضي الله عنه but oppose his way.
- ʿAlī رضي الله عنه loved Abū Bakr and ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما, yet the Rāfiḍah declare disassociation from them.
- This is in direct contradiction to ʿAlī’s own loyalty and actions.
- Hence, their claim is false and cannot be termed as true love of Ahl al-Bayt.
❖ Statement of Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله (d. 728H):
طائفة رافضة يظهرون موالاة أهل البيت، وهم فى الباطن إما ملاحدة زنادقة، وإما جهال، وأصحاب هوى …
A group of Rāfiḍah outwardly display love for Ahl al-Bayt, but inwardly they are either heretical atheists, ignorant, or people of desires…
(al-Fatāwā al-Kubrā 1/195; Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā 25/301)

On the Day of Judgment, companionship will be granted to those who truly loved the Prophet ﷺ and his companions according to Sharʿī criteria — love shown through obedience, respect, and following their way. The Shia’s claim is invalid because it contradicts the actual teachings and allegiances of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه and Ahl al-Bayt.
