Will One Shorten Prayer When Regularly Traveling to Shop or School?

✿ Sourced from: Aḥkām wa Masā’il, Volume 1, Page 236

❖ Question

A man travels to his shop or school, stays there for one or two days, and then returns home. This has become his regular routine.
Should he shorten his prayers (qasr) or perform them in full (itam)?

✦ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, Ammā ba‘d!

✔ If a person regularly travels to his shop or school and stays there for a day or two, then returns home:

✿ Ruling:

While traveling, he will perform qasr, i.e., shorten the four-rak‘ah prayers to two rak‘ahs.

➋ Even after reaching his shop or school, he will continue to offer qasr, as he is still considered a traveler unless:

  – He intends to stay for four days or more, in which case he would pray full (itam).

➌ Upon returning home, once he enters the limits of his city or village, he is no longer a traveler and must perform full prayers.

✔ Summary:

❖ A person who travels regularly for short durations (less than four days):

✔ Will shorten (qasr) his prayers both during travel and at the temporary destination.
✔ Will perform full prayers upon returning home.
