Wild Donkey Meat Is Ḥalāl
By: Imran Ayyub Lahori
Wild donkey meat is permissible to eat, as confirmed by authentic narrations.
It is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was gifted wild donkey meat and said:
"لَوْلَا أَنَّا مُحْرِمُونَ لَقَبِلْنَاهُ مِنْكَ"
"If we were not in the state of iḥrām, we would have accepted it from you."
[Muslim: 1194 – Kitāb al-Ḥajj: Bāb Taḥrīm al-Ṣayd al-Maʾkūl al-Barrī]
This indicates that had the Prophet ﷺ not been in the state of iḥrām, he would have eaten it — a clear proof of its permissibility.
Another narration mentions that some Companions ate wild donkey meat while others abstained. When they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, he said:
"إِنَّمَا هِيَ طُعْمَةٌ أَطْعَمَكُمُوهَا اللَّهُ"
"It is provision that Allah has fed you."
[Muslim: 1196 – Kitāb al-Ḥajj: Bāb Taḥrīm al-Ṣayd al-Maʾkūl al-Barrī]
Conclusion: Wild donkey meat is ḥalāl. The only time it becomes impermissible is during the state of iḥrām, due to the general prohibition of hunting in that state.
