Why Transporting Funerals by Vehicle Is Impermissible in Islam

Prohibition of Transporting the Funeral by Vehicle

❖ Transporting the Funeral by Vehicle is Impermissible in Certain Situations

Transporting a deceased by vehicle — especially when everyone follows in vehicles and no one walks with the funeral — is impermissible due to several key reasons.

◈ Reasons for the Prohibition:

➊ This practice resembles the customs of disbelievers (كفار).

➋ It constitutes a bidʿah (innovation) when introduced into a religious context, such as funeral rites.

➌ It defeats the purpose of the funeral, which includes:

  • Carrying the bier on the shoulder
  • Walking behind it
  • Being reminded of the Hereafter through this solemn act

➍ It limits participation in the funeral:

  • Not everyone can afford private transport
  • This reduces the number of attendees, contrary to the Sunnah which encourages large attendance

➎ Whether in near or far locations, this method of funeral transport is not in line with the objectives of Islamic teachings.

✅ Conclusion

✔ Transporting the funeral in a vehicle may be permissible in necessity, but making it the default method, and abandoning the Sunnah of walking and carrying the bier, renders the act impermissible and blameworthy.
✔ It is contrary to the humility, remembrance of the Hereafter, and communal spirit emphasized in Islamic funeral practices.
