"No person should bid over the sale of their brother."
[Sahih Bukhari, Book of Sales: 2140]
Our society often struggles with fairness in buying and selling, leading to extremes. If someone is selling an item or making a purchase, no one else is permitted to interfere and disrupt their transaction. The Prophet (peace be upon him) clarified in the above hadith that a person should not intervene in another's buying and selling.
Brotherhood in Business:
In another hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized:
"A believer is a brother to another believer, and it is not permissible for any believer to bid over the sale of their brother."
[Sahih Muslim, Book of Marriage: 1414]
Prohibition of Price Undercutting:
There is also a prohibition on price undercutting. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade bidding against a brother's bid.
[Sahih Bukhari, Book of Conditions: 2727]
Permissible Scenarios:
If the initial buyer withdraws from the deal, only then it is permissible for someone else to purchase the item. Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) has clarified this in the title of a related hadith.
[Sahih Bukhari, Book of Sales: Chapter 58]
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) notes that Imam Bukhari referenced a hadith from Sahih Muslim, which explicitly allows for the situation where a party withdraws from a transaction.
[Fath al-Bari, Vol. 4, p. 446]
Bidding with Ill Intentions:
Some people raise the price of an item without any intention of buying it, solely to disrupt the deal. This practice is explicitly prohibited in the hadiths.
[Sahih Bukhari, Book of Sales: 2142]
These teachings guide Muslims towards honesty and fairness in their transactions, promoting a harmonious and just business environment.
Prohibition:
