Why Good Deeds Earn No Reward in Disbelief?

◈ Commentary

This question encompasses multiple dimensions that are essential to understand:

◈ Reward for Righteous Deeds

The reward for righteous deeds is granted to the one who performs them with the intention of pleasing Allah ﷻ and who hopes for a reward in return. If a person has no desire for reward or is indifferent to it, then what basis is there for complaint when no reward is given? Hence, only those who hope for a reward from their Lord will receive it.

◈ Difference in Intention Behind Actions

The standard for a good deed is that it should be done in accordance with Allah’s command and with the intention of seeking His pleasure. For instance, if someone speaks the truth merely because they consider it a business principle or see personal gain in it, then such an act will not be considered righteous. The sincerity of intention is the key criterion for the acceptance of actions.

◈ Disbelief and Righteous Deeds

Disbelief acts like poison to good deeds. Just as the finest meal becomes harmful if laced with poison, likewise, disbelief renders good deeds ineffective. Disbelief nullifies the benefit of righteous acts.

◈ Summary

Even if an atheist performs good deeds, they are rendered worthless due to disbelief. Without faith and sincere intention, actions hold no real value.
