Why Does Islam Prohibit Visiting Magicians?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Explanation:

Islam is a complete and perfect religion that provides guidance for every aspect of life. Visiting magicians or seeking their help is strictly prohibited because it implies attributing powers to the magician that may (God forbid) be seen as greater or equivalent to Allah's power. Even comparing the power of any creation to that of Allah is absolutely incorrect and contrary to Islamic beliefs.

Warning Against Visiting Fortune-Tellers or Magicians:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Whoever goes to a soothsayer or a fortune-teller and believes in what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ."
[Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir by Al-Tabarani (10/76)]

This Hadith has also been reported by Imam Tirmidhi and Abu Ya’la, with a sound chain of narrators, indicating its authenticity.

Why is It Prohibited?

  1. Shirk (Associating Partners with Allah):
    • Visiting magicians and believing in their powers is a form of shirk, as it involves attributing divine powers of control, knowledge of the unseen, or fate to someone other than Allah.
  2. Denial of Revelation:
    • Believing in the statements of soothsayers or magicians equates to denying the guidance revealed in the Qur'an and Sunnah, as the Prophet ﷺ explicitly warned against such acts.
  3. Loss of Faith (Iman):
    • Relying on magicians implies reliance on falsehood and the unseen, which are major sins in Islam. It also leads to a deterioration of one’s faith and piety, moving a person closer to disbelief.
  4. Misguidance and Harm:
    • Magicians and fortune-tellers often use deceit, manipulation, and jinn-related magic, which can harm the person seeking their help both spiritually and physically.

Conclusion:

Islam strictly prohibits seeking help from magicians or fortune-tellers to protect the purity of belief in Tawhid (Oneness of Allah). Believing in their claims leads to spiritual destruction and disbelief. Muslims are encouraged to place their trust in Allah alone, seek help through prayers, supplications, and permissible means, and avoid all forms of shirk and superstition.
