Why Congregational Salat al-Tasbih Is Not Prescribed in Islam

Ruling on Congregational Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ (Prayer of Glorification) ❖
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on offering Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ in congregation?

❖ Answer:

Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ is an individual prayer; performing it in congregation is not prescribed (mashrūʿ) in Sharīʿah. There is no evidence from the Prophet ﷺ to establish that he ever offered it in congregation.

Only those voluntary (nafl) prayers are to be performed in congregation which have been proven through authentic Sunnah. Otherwise, even the Sunnah Rawātib (regular Sunnah prayers before and after obligatory ones) should be offered in congregation — but no Muslim has ever done so.

Moreover, how would it be practically possible to offer Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ in congregation?

  • The Imām recites the prescribed tasbīḥāt silently.
  • If he completes before others and goes into rukūʿ, what will the followers (muqtadīs) do?
  • These tasbīḥāt are recited in every rakʿah, and doing so in congregation raises numerous practical issues.

Hence, performing it individually is the correct way and includes goodness and virtue.

✿ Scholarly Opinions:

❀ Mufti Mahmūd and Mufti ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq Ḥaqqānī wrote:

"Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ is neither narrated nor prescribed to be offered in congregation."

✅ Conclusion:

✔ Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ should be performed individually, not in congregation.
✔ There is no prophetic precedent for offering it with a group.
✔ Avoiding congregation for it prevents confusion and maintains the spirit of voluntary worship.
