Who Was the Last Companion of the Prophet (ﷺ) to Pass Away?

Excerpted from: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

Question:

Who was the last Companion of the Prophet (ﷺ) to pass away?

❖ Answer:

Sayyidunā Abū Ṭufayl ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah (رضي الله عنه) was the last Companion to pass away — this is a matter of consensus (ijmāʿ). However, there are differing opinions regarding the exact year of his death.

Statement of Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (رحمه الله) [d. 774 AH]:

هو آخر من رأى النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم وفاة بالإجماع
"Among those who saw the Prophet ﷺ, the one who passed away last — by consensus — was Abū Ṭufayl ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah (رضي الله عنه)."
