❖ Question:
What are the criteria for leading the prayer, and who is most deserving of the Imāmah?
❖ Answer:
Regarding this matter, it is narrated from Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"The one who should lead the people in prayer is the one who has the most knowledge of the recitation of the Qur’an. If they are equal in recitation, then the one who has more knowledge of the Sunnah. If they are equal in Sunnah, then the one who migrated earlier. If they are equal in migration, then the one who accepted Islam first. A man must not lead another in his domain without his permission, nor should he sit in his reserved place in his house except with his permission."
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Book of Masājid, Chapter: Who Has More Right to Lead (Hadith 673)
Some versions of this Hadith mention age instead of early acceptance of Islam.
From this Hadith, it is clear that:① First preference should be given to the one who is most proficient in Qur’anic recitation.
② If equal, then to the one with greater knowledge of Sunnah.
③ If still equal, then the one with earlier migration.
④ If equal in that too, then the one who accepted Islam earlier (or is older).
It is obligatory upon the one appointed as an Imam to be considerate of his followers, for behind him may be children, elderly, ill, travelers, and people of varying abilities. Hence, the prayer should neither be too lengthy, nor so brief that the essential postures of Qiyām, Rukūʿ, and Sujūd are compromised.
❖ Note:
Some Ḥanafī scholars have unfortunately included baseless and absurd conditions for Imāmah in their texts, such as found in ad-Durr al-Mukhtār. These include that the Imām’s wife should be the most beautiful, or that the Imām should have a large head and a small private organ. Such conditions are laughable, shameful, and completely unfounded — neither authentically reported from the Qur’an and Sunnah nor even supported by weak narrations.
May Allah keep us steadfast upon the noble path of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Āmīn.
