When to Begin Iʿtikāf and What Is Permissible During It?

❀ Time to Enter the Place of Iʿtikāf and Permissible Acts During Iʿtikāf ❀

❓ Question:

When should one enter the place of Iʿtikāf, and what are the permissible acts during Iʿtikāf?

✅ Entering the Place of Iʿtikāf:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform Iʿtikāf in the last ten nights of Ramadan.

"The Prophet ﷺ used to perform Iʿtikāf in the last ten (nights) of Ramadan."
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Bāb al-Iʿtikāf fī al-ʿAshr al-Awākhir ḥadīth 2026]

It is also narrated from Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها:

“When the Prophet ﷺ intended to perform Iʿtikāf, he would enter [the place of Iʿtikāf] after offering the Fajr prayer.”
[Abū Dāwūd, Kitāb aṣ-Ṣiyām, ḥadīth 2464]

Taking both narrations into account, the general understanding among scholars is:

➤ The last ten nights begin at sunset on the 20th of Ramadan, so the one intending Iʿtikāf should enter the mosque at the start of the 21st night (i.e., after sunset on the 20th).

➤ He should spend the night in recitation of Qur'an, dhikr, tasbīḥ, tahlīl, and nafl prayers, and after Fajr prayer on the 21st, he should formally enter his designated spot for Iʿtikāf.

✿ Another Position:

Based on the ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها, some scholars opine that the Prophet ﷺ began his Iʿtikāf after Fajr prayer, either on the 20th or 21st, though the specific day is unclear.

➤ To reconcile both views and to ensure preparation for Laylat al-Qadr, it is preferable to enter the mosque on the morning of the 20th, so one is spiritually and physically prepared as soon as the 21st night begins.

➤ This view is supported by a narration in which some companions had left on the morning of the 20th, but the Prophet ﷺ instructed them to return and continue Iʿtikāf, indicating that the last ten days include the 20th day.

[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Iʿtikāf, ḥadīth 2027]

Thus, entering the mosque on the morning of the 20th is more cautious and allows better observance of Laylat al-Qadr, as per scholars like Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbdullāh Bahāwalpūrī رحمه الله.

✅ Permissible Acts During Iʿtikāf:

During Iʿtikāf, it is permissible for a person to:

✔ Bathe (ghusl)
✔ Comb the hair
✔ Apply oil
✔ Fulfill natural bodily needs such as urination, defecation, and obligatory ghusl

However, the Muʿtakif (one in Iʿtikāf) should not leave the designated area except for necessary and Shariah-justified reasons.
