When should missed fasts (qaḍāʾ) of Ramadan be observed?
For one who has missed obligatory fasts in Ramadan, it is better to make them up consecutively.
However, it is permissible to observe them intermittently, as long as they are completed before the next Ramadan.
There is no harm if someone observes the six fasts of Shawwāl before making up the missed fasts of Ramadan.
فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
“…then make up [the same] number of days [missed] on other days…”
Sūrat al-Baqarah: 185
✔ ʿAllāmah ʿUbaydullāh Mubārakpūrī رحمه الله (d. 1414 AH) commented on this verse:
“The command to make up missed fasts is given without specifying a particular time, so it is not allowed to restrict it to a certain period without evidence.”
