We have been offering Qasr prayer for many years. Under what conditions is Qasr to be performed? And on how long a journey does it become necessary?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, Ammā ba‘d!
This response outlines the complete Shar‘i criteria for when and how the Qasr prayer (shortened prayer) is to be performed by a traveler, based on authentic Ahadith and the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
✿ According to Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ performed Qasr prayer at a distance of three farsakh.
➤ A farsakh is an old unit of measurement. Generally:
1 farsakh ≈ 7 km
So, 3 farsakh ≈ 21–22 km
✔ Hence, if a person travels 22 km or more, and exits the populated area of his town or village, he should begin performing Qasr (shortened) prayer.
"The Prophet ﷺ offered Qasr after reaching Dhul-Ḥulayfah on his journey for Ḥajj."

✿ If a traveler intends to stay somewhere for four days or fewer, then he continues performing Qasr during that stay.
✔ Prophetic Example:
The Prophet ﷺ arrived in Makkah on 4th Dhul-Ḥijjah and knew that he would leave for Minā on the 8th.
He therefore intended a four-day stay and performed Qasr throughout.
✘ However, if one intends to stay longer than four days, then:
➤ He must perform full (itam) prayers from the moment he arrives, as there is no evidence that the Prophet ﷺ ever performed Qasr with an intention to stay beyond four days.
✿ If the duration of stay is undecided or uncertain — for example, due to travel delays, military orders, or political waiting — then:
✔ There is no specific limit for Qasr in such cases.
✔ One may continue to perform Qasr for an indefinite period, as long as the intention to stay four days or more has not been firmly made.
➊ Distance for Qasr:
✔ Begin Qasr when traveling ≥ 22 km, after leaving the residential limits.
➋ Qasr During Stay:
✔ If intending to stay ≤ 4 days, Qasr is valid.
✘ If intending to stay > 4 days, pray full (itam).
➌ Uncertain Stay:
✔ Continue Qasr until a firm decision to stay four days or more is made.
✔ Conclusion:
The Qasr prayer is a concession and mercy from Allah for the traveler. Its application depends on actual travel distance, and clear intention of stay. The Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ provides a clear practical framework for when and how to apply this Shar‘i ruling.

❖ Question
We have been offering Qasr prayer for many years. Under what conditions is Qasr to be performed? And on how long a journey does it become necessary?
✦ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, Ammā ba‘d!
This response outlines the complete Shar‘i criteria for when and how the Qasr prayer (shortened prayer) is to be performed by a traveler, based on authentic Ahadith and the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
❖ ① Minimum Distance Required for Qasr
✿ According to Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ performed Qasr prayer at a distance of three farsakh.
➤ A farsakh is an old unit of measurement. Generally:
1 farsakh ≈ 7 km
So, 3 farsakh ≈ 21–22 km
✔ Hence, if a person travels 22 km or more, and exits the populated area of his town or village, he should begin performing Qasr (shortened) prayer.
✿ Supporting Evidence:

❖ ② Intention of Stay During Travel
✿ If a traveler intends to stay somewhere for four days or fewer, then he continues performing Qasr during that stay.
✔ Prophetic Example:

❖ ③ Indefinite or Uncertain Duration of Stay
✿ If the duration of stay is undecided or uncertain — for example, due to travel delays, military orders, or political waiting — then:
✔ There is no specific limit for Qasr in such cases.
✔ One may continue to perform Qasr for an indefinite period, as long as the intention to stay four days or more has not been firmly made.
✔ Summary of Rulings:
➊ Distance for Qasr:
✔ Begin Qasr when traveling ≥ 22 km, after leaving the residential limits.
➋ Qasr During Stay:
✔ If intending to stay ≤ 4 days, Qasr is valid.
✘ If intending to stay > 4 days, pray full (itam).
