This ruling is derived from the book "500 Questions and Answers for Women", based on the fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
After penetration, the man withdraws his private organ before ejaculation, ensuring that the seminal fluid is discharged outside the woman’s private area.
When Is ‘Azl Obligatory?
The permissibility and prohibition of ‘azl depend on specific conditions:- Permission of a Free Woman (Wife):
- It is not permissible for a husband to practice ‘azl (withdrawal) with a free woman (his wife) without her consent.
- This ruling is supported by narrations:
Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) said:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade practicing ‘azl with a free woman without her consent."
[Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 1988 (Weak)]
Similarly, Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) said:
"It is forbidden to practice ‘azl with a free woman without her permission."
[Sunan al-Bayhaqi, Vol. 7, Page 231 (Weak)] - These narrations indicate that it is mandatory to obtain the wife’s consent before practicing ‘azl.
- In the Case of a Slave Woman:
- Practicing ‘azl with a slave woman does not require her consent.
- However, this should only be done in cases of extreme necessity or urgent need.
The Method of ‘Azl
The process of ‘azl is described as follows:After penetration, the man withdraws his private organ before ejaculation, ensuring that the seminal fluid is discharged outside the woman’s private area.
