❀ When Food is Served at the Time of Maghrib Prayer
In this situation, one should eat the food calmly first and then offer the prayer.
❶ It is narrated from Hazrat Anas رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
"إِذَا قُدِّمَ الْعَشَاءُ فَابْدَءُوا بِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُصَلُّوا الْمَغْرِبَ"
“When the evening meal is served, begin with it before you perform the Maghrib prayer.”
[Bukhari: 672, Kitab al-Adhan: Bab Iza Hadara al-Ta‘am wa Uqimat al-Salat; Muslim: 64; Tirmidhi: 353; Nasa’i: 2/111; Ibn Majah: 933; Ahmad: 3/110; Darimi: 1/293; Bayhaqi: 3/72; Sharh al-Sunnah: 801; Ibn Khuzaymah: 934; Ibn Hibban: 2066; Abu Awanah: 2/14]
❷ A similar narration is also reported from Hazrat Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما. In Sahih Bukhari, Sunan Abu Dawud, and other compilations, additional words are present stating that:
“When food was placed for Hazrat Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما and the prayer was about to start, he would not pray until he finished eating, even though he could hear the recitation of the Imam.”
[Bukhari: 673, Kitab al-Adhan: Bab Iza Hadara al-Ta‘am wa Uqimat al-Salat; Muslim: 559; Abu Dawud: 3757; Ibn Majah: 934; Tirmidhi: 354; Ibn Khuzaymah: 935]
