Taken from: Ahkām wa Masā’il by Shaykh Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbānī
My husband has said to me several times: "I will divorce you" or "You must be divorced."
People are saying that I should not stay in his house anymore because I am already divorced. I am very disturbed by this. Please clarify this matter in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith.
Allah ﷻ has established the relationship between man and woman for peace and tranquility. As Allah ﷻ has said:
﴿ وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِّنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً ﴾
Surah ar-Rūm: 21
“And among His signs is that He created for you from your own selves spouses, so that you may find tranquility in them, and He has placed between you affection and mercy.”
However, Shayṭān strives hard to destroy this sacred relationship between husband and wife. He causes conflict between them, leading to the ruin of households, and often resulting in divorce, which is a highly disliked matter.
We must safeguard our homes from ever reaching such a stage.
A woman is considered divorced only when the husband explicitly pronounces the words of ṭalāq (divorce), or uses indirect words but with the intention of divorce.
➤ Saying statements like:
does not constitute an actual divorce.
These are merely threats or warnings about divorce, not the actual execution of it.
So do not be distressed. Divorce has not taken place in your case. Both husband and wife should:
✔ Engage in repentance (tawbah) and seeking forgiveness (istighfār)
✔ Avoid actions that lead to conflict and disputes at home
✔ Ignore people’s assumptions or judgments
May Allah ﷻ make our homes centers of peace, affection, and mercy, and protect them from all evil and discord. Āmīn.
