When Can a Muʿtakif Exit the Mosque During Iʿtikāf?

✿ The Muʿtakif May Exit Only for Necessary Needs ✿
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ The Muʿtakif Should Not Leave the Mosque Except for Dire Necessities

ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrates:

كان لا يدخل البيت إلا لحاجة إذا كان معتكفا
“When the Prophet ﷺ was in iʿtikāf, he would not enter the house except for a necessary need.”
📘 [Bukhārī: 2029, Kitāb al-Iʿtikāf: Bāb Lā Yadkhul al-Bayt illā li-Ḥājah; Muslim: 297; Abū Dāwūd: 2468; Ibn Mājah: 1776; Ibn Khuzaymah: 2231; Ibn Ḥibbān: 3669; Bayhaqī: 4/320]

➋ Once, Ṣafiyyah رضي الله عنها came to visit the Prophet ﷺ while he was in iʿtikāf. The Prophet ﷺ escorted her back to her home.

📘 [Bukhārī: 2035, 2037, Kitāb al-Iʿtikāf: Bāb Hal Yakhruj al-Muʿtakif li-Ḥawāʾijih ilā Bāb al-Masjid; Muslim: 2175; Abū Dāwūd: 2470; Ibn Mājah: 1779; Aḥmad: 6/337; Dārimī: 2/27; Ibn Khuzaymah: 2233]

✅ This indicates that the Muʿtakif may briefly exit the mosque to fulfill essential needs such as escorting someone or collecting necessary personal items, only when no other arrangement is possible.

➌ Another narration from ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها states:

لا يخرج لحاجة إلا لما لا بد له منه
“The Muʿtakif should not leave the mosque except for an unavoidable necessity.”
📘 [Ḥasan Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 2160, Kitāb al-Ṣawm: Bāb al-Muʿtakif Yaʿūd al-Marīḍ; Abū Dāwūd: 2473; Bayhaqī: 4/321]
