◈ What Should Be Said in Response to “Qad Qāmat al-Ṣalāh”? Shar‘ī Ruling ◈
Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 319
We have been saying "Aqāmahā Allāh wa Adāmahā" in response to "Qad qāmat al-ṣalāh" during the iqāmah.
Recently, we’ve heard that this statement is not authentically established in ḥadīth.
Is this claim correct?
If yes, then what should be said in reply to “Qad qāmat al-ṣalāh”?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!
The ḥadīth which states that the response to "Qad qāmat al-ṣalāh" is "Aqāmahā Allāh wa Adāmahā" is weak (ḍaʿīf).
“The ḥadīth contains a majhūl (unknown) narrator, and Shahr ibn Ḥawshab (another narrator) has been criticized by several scholars of ḥadīth, though Imām Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal considered him reliable.”
Conclusion: The chain is not strong enough to establish this response as sunnah.
✔ It is permissible to say:
“أَقَامَهَا اللَّهُ وَأَدَامَهَا”
“May Allah establish it and make it continuous.”
However...
✔ The better and more cautious practice is to repeat the words:
“قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ”
Just as is done with the rest of the iqāmah phrases.
◈ The phrase "Aqāmahā Allāh wa Adāmahā" is based on a weak ḥadīth, though some scholars tolerated its use due to the leniency shown in virtuous actions (faḍā’il al-aʿmāl).
◈ Therefore, saying it is allowed, but not preferred.
Recommended: Repeat "Qad qāmat al-ṣalāh" as the response, just like one responds to “Allāhu Akbar” or “Ḥayya ʿala al-ṣalāh” in the iqāmah.
