What Should the Follower Say During Qunut?

Compiled by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid (May Allah preserve him)

Question:

What should the follower say when the Imam is performing Qunut?

Answer:

When the Imam is performing Qunut after bowing, the follower should say آمین.

This is supported by a reliable Hadith in which Sayyidina Ibn Abbas (رضی اللہ عنہما) narrated:

"The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) performed Qunut continuously for a month in the Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers after every prayer when he said سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ from the last rak'ah. He made dua against the tribe of Banu Sulaim, specifically the clans of Raal, Dhakwan, and Usiyyah. Those who were behind him said آمین."
[Abu Dawood, Book of Witr: Chapter on Qunut in Prayer, Hadith 1443]

Imam al-Albani (رحمه الله) authenticated this narration.

This Hadith shows that the follower should only say آمین.
