What Should a Woman Do if She Gets Her Menses During Prayer Time?

Authored by: Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amaanpuri

Question:

If a woman gets her menstrual period during the time for a prayer, what should she do?

Answer:
If a woman delays performing a prayer out of laziness or negligence after its time has started, and then her menses begin before she could perform the prayer and the prayer time ends, she will be required to make up that missed prayer. This ruling is based on the verdicts of scholars such as Imam Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله) and Imam Muhammad ibn Sireen (رحمه الله) who stated:
"If a woman experiences menstruation during the time of a prayer, she is not obliged to make up that prayer unless she had delayed it (out of negligence) until the time passed."
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 2/339, with an authentic chain)

Additional Note:
If a woman becomes pure (i.e., her menstruation ends) before the prayer time completely finishes, but not enough time remains to perform both the purification (ghusl) and the prayer, she will still be obligated to make up that missed prayer.
