What is the ruling on making statements of disbelief (kufr) in jest or as a joke?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!
◈ Making a statement of kufr in jest or performing a kufri act as a joke constitutes actual disbelief (kufr).
◈ Such an act nullifies one’s Islam, and repentance (tawbah) becomes obligatory for the one who committed it.
❀ ʿAllāmah Ibn al-ʿArabī (رحمه الله) (d. 543 AH) states:
"Indeed, mocking or jesting about kufr is itself kufr, and there is no difference of opinion among the Ummah on this matter."
(Aḥkām al-Qur’ān, 2/543; Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī, 8/197)
Conclusion:
◈ Jesting about matters of disbelief is not treated lightly in Islam.
◈ The consensus of scholars confirms that even in jest, uttering or acting upon kufr is disbelief.
◈ Therefore, such statements require immediate repentance and renewal of faith.
