What Is the Ruling on Takbīrāt al-Intiqāl (Transitional Takbīrs in Salah)?

Derived from: Fatāwā Amnapūrī by Shaykh Ghulām Mustafa Ẓahīr Amnapūrī

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on saying Takbīr when moving between different positions in Salah (Takbīrāt al-Intiqāl)?

✅ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!

✿ Ruling:

◈ In Salah, one should say “Allāhu Akbar” while transitioning from one position to another — except when rising from rukūʿ, in which case the prescribed phrase is:

“سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ”
“Allah hears the one who praises Him.”

✿ Hadith Evidence:

Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (رحمه الله) narrates:

“Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) led us in prayer and would say takbīr every time he bowed or rose. After completing the prayer, he said:
‘By Allah! I am the one among you who most closely resembles the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’”

(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 392)

✿ Commentary of the Scholars:

Ḥāfiẓ al-Nawawī (رحمه الله) (d. 676 AH) states:

“This hadith proves that takbīr is to be said when bowing and rising — at every movement — except when rising from rukūʿ, where one should say Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah. This is now a matter of consensus among scholars.”
(Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 4/97)

✅ Conclusion:

✔ Saying “Allāhu Akbar” during every movement between the positions of prayer is Sunnah and established.
Exception: When rising from rukūʿ, say “Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah” instead.
✔ This practice is backed by authentic Hadith and has been universally accepted by the Ummah.
