What is the ruling on offering Qadāʾ (make-up) for missed Sunnah prayers?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!
◈ If Sunnah prayers are missed, it is Sunnah to make them up (Qadāʾ) later.
◈ This is proven from the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself.
❀ Sayyidah Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) narrates:
She saw the Prophet ﷺ praying two rak‘ahs after ‘Asr and asked about them. The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“O daughter of Abū Umayyah! You asked about the two rak‘ahs after ‘Asr. The truth is that some people from the tribe of ʿAbd al-Qays came to me and kept me busy, so I missed the two rak‘ahs after Ẓuhr, and these are those two.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1233, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 833)
❀ ʿAllāmah al-Khaṭṭābī (رحمه الله) (d. 388 AH) explains:
“This Hadith shows a legal ruling: habitual Sunnah prayers, if missed, should be made up—just as obligatory (farḍ) prayers are made up. The Prophet ﷺ made up the two rak‘ahs of Ẓuhr after ‘Asr due to being occupied with the arrival of the delegation.”
(Maʿālim al-Sunan, 2/137)
◈ Making up missed Sunnah Rawātib (regular Sunnahs) is legislated and proven from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
◈ Just like fard prayers are made up when missed, missed Sunnah prayers may also be made up later, and this is a practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
