What is the Ruling on Extravagance at the Iftar Table?

Question:

Does extravagance and excessiveness in preparing food for Iftar reduce the reward of fasting?

❖ Answer:

Extravagance does not diminish the reward of fasting, nor does it affect the fast once it is complete, even if one engages in a prohibited act thereafter. However, extravagance falls under the prohibition mentioned in the following verse of Allah Almighty:
وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
[Surah Al-A'raf: 31]

“And eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.”

Thus, it is established that extravagance is, in itself, a prohibited act, and moderation is a form of economic balance. If a person possesses more than what is necessary, then it is better to give the excess in charity.
