What is the Relationship Between Shaytan and a Judge?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Answer:

Shaytan accompanies an unjust judge, as mentioned in the Hadith.

Evidence from Hadith:

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

إن الله مع القاضي ما لم يجر، فإذا جار تخلى عنه ولزمه الشيطان

"Indeed, Allah is with the judge as long as he does not act unjustly. But when he commits injustice, Allah distances Himself from him, and Shaytan clings to him."
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Ahkam, Hadith No. 1330; Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 4/93; Al-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi 10/134)

Explanation:

  • Why does Shaytan attach himself to an unjust judge?
    • Injustice is a Branch of Oppression: Committing injustice (ظلم) is a major form of sin and one of Shaytan’s favorite deeds.
    • When a judge abandons fairness and indulges in unjust rulings, he becomes a companion of Shaytan, as his decisions harm others and promote corruption.
  • Allah Commands Justice:
Allah has commanded justice and warned against any form of bias or oppression, as stated in the Quran:

    وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَىٰ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا ۚ اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ
"And do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness."
    (Surah Al-Ma'idah: 8)

Conclusion:

An unjust judge loses Allah’s support and protection, opening the door for Shaytan to influence him. The Hadith emphasizes the importance of justice, as fairness is integral to Islam and is directly tied to righteousness (تقویٰ). Conversely, oppression leads to the path of Shaytan and ultimately destruction. Judges and those in positions of authority must be particularly cautious to avoid falling into this trap.

It is essential for every Muslim to uphold justice, even when it conflicts with personal interests, to maintain Allah’s pleasure and protection.
