What is the punishment for a person who becomes an apostate (i.e., leaves Islam)?
The punishment for apostasy (Riddah) is death. This ruling is established through:
➤ The Qur’an
➤ Mutawātir Ahadith (mass-transmitted Prophetic traditions)
➤ The consensus (Ijma‘) of the Ummah
❀ Al-‘Allāmah al-Kāsānī al-Hanafī رحمه الله (d. 587 AH) states:
كذا العرب لما ارتدت بعد وفاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أجمعت الصحابة رضي الله عنهم على قتلهم
"When some Arab tribes became apostates after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Companions رضي الله عنهم unanimously agreed on executing them."
(Bada’i‘ al-Sana’i‘, 7/134)
