What is Taghut?

Response:

Allah Almighty says:

"Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray."

[Surah Al-Nisa: 60]
In this verse, Allah (عز وجل) negates the faith of a person who claims to believe in the Shari'ah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and previous prophets, yet seeks judgment outside the Qur’an and Sunnah. This verse highlights the condemnation of anyone who abandons the divine laws and turns to false systems of judgment.

Here, Taghut refers to anyone or anything that does not judge by the laws of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Allah explicitly states:

"They wish to refer judgment to Taghut while they were commanded to reject it, and Satan wishes to lead them far astray."

This warning emphasizes that seeking judgment from any source other than the Qur’an and Sunnah leads to misguidance, and Satan takes advantage of such deviation to cause complete and distant misguidance.

Key Takeaway:
Taghut encompasses all systems, individuals, or ideologies that oppose the divine guidance found in the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is a comprehensive term for anything that leads to deviation from Allah’s commandments.
