❖ Ruling on Unfulfilled Vowed Fasts if a Person Dies

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the ruling if someone dies without having fulfilled their vowed (nadhar) fasts?

❖ Answer:

If a person dies without having observed the fasts that were vowed upon him, then his guardian (walī or heir) should fast on his behalf.

Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

مَنْ مَاتَ وَعَلَيْهِ صِيَامٌ صَامَ عَنْهُ وَلِيُّهُ

“Whoever dies while he still owed fasts, his guardian should fast on his behalf.”

📘 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1952, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1147

✅ Summary:

① If someone dies without completing their vowed fasts,
② Then their heir or guardian should observe those fasts on their behalf,
③ This ruling is based on an authentic ḥadīth from the Prophet ﷺ.
