Scholarly Opinions on Magic (Sihr)

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) stated:
"Magic is a combination of the influence of wicked spirits and the activation of their natural forces."
(Zad al-Ma‘ad, 4/126)

Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (رحمه الله) mentioned:
"In Shari‘ah, magic refers to anything whose cause remains hidden and creates an illusion different from reality. It serves as a deception and an act contrary to truth."
(Mukhtar al-Sihah, under the term ‘Sihr’, p. 288)

Imam al-Qurtubi (رحمه الله) explained:
"The phrase ‘and from the evil of the blowers in knots’ (in Surah Al-Falaq) refers to female sorcerers who blow into knotted strings while reciting incantations."
(Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 20/257)

Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله) affirmed:
"Magic is real, and the majority of scholars acknowledge its existence."
(Fath al-Bari, 10/222)

Imam Ibn Qudamah (رحمه الله) stated:
"Magic has a real impact. Some forms of magic can lead to death, while others cause illness. Certain spells prevent a man from approaching his wife, while some create separation between spouses. Other forms instill hatred or affection between people."
