Weak Hadith on Not Responding to the Adhan

Not Responding to the Adhan – Narration Based on a Weak Chain

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the authenticity of the following narration?

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abū Hurairah (RA):

من الجفاء أن تسمع المؤذن فلا تقول مثل ما يقول .

“It is from harshness (disloyalty) that you hear the mu’adhdhin and do not repeat what he says.”
(al-Duʿā’ by al-Ṭabarānī: 481)

❖ Answer:

The chain of narration is weak.

Hārūn ibn Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh is unanimously declared weak.

Ḥāfiẓ al-Būṣīrī (رحمه الله) said:

قد اتفقوا على تضعيفه .

“The scholars of Hadith are unanimous on declaring Hārūn ibn Hārūn weak.”
(Miṣbāḥ al-Zujājah: 1/118)

✅ Conclusion:
This narration about it being “disloyalty” not to respond to the Adhan has a weak chain and cannot be relied upon as evidence.
