Preventing Family Members from Wailing at the Time of Death
By: Imran Ayub Lahori
It is important to prevent family members from crying uncontrollably or wailing at the time of a person's death.
This is because if one does not prevent them, the deceased may be subjected to punishment due to their family's wailing after their death, as mentioned in the Hadith:
إن الميت يعذب ببكاء أهله
“Indeed, the deceased is punished because of the weeping of his family.”
[Bukhari: 1292, Kitab al-Jana'iz: Chapter on What is Disliked Regarding Lamentation over the Deceased, Muslim: 932]
What is meant by "crying" here refers specifically to wailing and lamentation (نوحہ). However, mere shedding of tears without loud lamenting is not problematic.
A detailed explanation of this issue will be provided in the upcoming section titled "Accompanying the Funeral Procession."
