Voluntary Fasts (Nafl Rozay)

By: Ubaidullah Tahir (Hafizahullah)

❀ Voluntary Fasting Outside of Ramadan: The Practice of the Prophet ﷺ

❀ Narration of Anas ibn Malik

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sometimes abstain from fasting in a given month to such an extent that we would assume he would not fast at all during that month. At other times, he ﷺ would fast so frequently that we would think he would not refrain from fasting for even a single day that month. Likewise, if one wished to see him praying at night, he could see him in that state, and if one wished to see him sleeping, he could also see him in that state.
[Sahih al-Bukhari 1972]

❀ Narration of Ibn Abbas

Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما reports that the Prophet ﷺ never fasted an entire month other than Ramadan. During other months, he ﷺ would sometimes fast so frequently that someone might say, "By Allah! He will not stop fasting!" And at other times, he ﷺ would abstain from fasting to such an extent that someone might say, "By Allah! He will not fast at all!"
[Sahih al-Bukhari 1971, Sahih Muslim 1157]
