Question:
What is the ruling on visiting the sick?
Answer:
Visiting the sick is a legislated, recommended Sunnah. Many authentic aḥādīth indicate its virtue.
❀ Ḥāfiẓ al-Nawawī رحمه الله (d. 676H) said:
أما عيادة المريض ، فسنة بالإجماع وسواء فيه من يعرفه ومن لا يعرفه والقريب والأجنبي.
“As for visiting the sick, it is a Sunnah by consensus — whether the patient is known or unknown, a relative or a stranger.”
(Sharḥ al-Nawawī: 14/31)
Conclusion:By unanimous agreement, visiting the sick is a Sunnah practice, encouraged regardless of whether the patient is a relative, acquaintance, or stranger.
