Virtues of the Companions in the Light of Qur'an and Hadith

Written by: Hafiz Sher Muhammad al-Athari

Introduction

The enemies of Islam have always attempted to malign the sacred group of the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) in order to indirectly target the very person whose love and companionship shaped them — the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Their ultimate aim was to undermine the foundation of Prophethood itself, for once that foundation collapses, neither Islam nor Muslims would remain. Though they have never fully succeeded, their schemes continue.

The purpose behind our consistent writing on the virtues of the Companions is to expose the plots of these enemies and to erase their slanders, so that the hearts of Muslims may be filled with love and reverence for these noble personalities.

Qur'anic Testimony for the Virtues of the Companions

❖ Allah says:
"But Allah has made faith beloved to you and beautified it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience hateful to you. These are the rightly guided — as a bounty and favor from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."
(Surah Al-Hujurat: 7–8)

From this verse, several points are evident:
➊ Allah Himself testifies that faith is beloved to the Companions.
➋ Their hearts have been adorned with faith.
➌ They are among the rightly guided.
➍ They have received Allah’s favor and grace.
➎ They hate disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience.

❖ Allah says:
"Certainly Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave you the pledge under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with a near victory."
(Surah Al-Fath: 18)

This verse refers to the pledge of allegiance under the tree during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. The Companions vowed to fight and not flee. Allah acknowledged the sincerity in their hearts, thus refuting those who hold ill thoughts about them.

❖ Allah says:
"But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and lives. For them are the good things, and it is they who are successful."
(Surah At-Tawbah: 88)

This verse affirms the Companions’ commitment to sacrifice everything — their wealth and their lives — in the path of Allah. Despite their high rank, some still harbor resentment against them, which is a sign of ignorance and misguidance. As the saying goes, "Spitting at the sky falls back on one's face."

❖ Allah says:
"And remember the favor of Allah upon you — when you were enemies and He united your hearts, so you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it."
(Surah Aal Imran: 103)

This verse confirms that the Companions once bore mutual enmity before Islam, but Allah united their hearts. If any post-Islamic conflicts occurred, they were based on ijtihad (scholarly judgment), and always with the intent of serving the religion.

❖ Allah says:
"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are harsh against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration..."
(Surah Al-Fath: 29)

This verse highlights multiple characteristics of the Companions:
➊ Harsh against disbelievers.
➋ Merciful among themselves.
➌ Their lives are filled with worship.
➍ Constantly seeking Allah's bounty and pleasure.

It is clear that all their actions were grounded in sincerity and devotion to Allah.

❖ Allah says:
"When those who disbelieved had placed arrogance in their hearts — the arrogance of ignorance — Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and made them adhere to the word of righteousness. And they were more deserving and worthy of it. And Allah is Knowing of all things."
(Surah Al-Fath: 26)

Given this divine praise, can any believer harbor suspicion against the Companions? If someone does, it indicates hypocrisy or misguidance. The Prophet ﷺ beautifully stated:
"Only a believer loves the Ansar, and only a hypocrite hates them. Whoever loves them, Allah will love him, and whoever hates them, Allah will hate him."
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 3783)

Final Remarks

From Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq رضي الله عنه to Sayyiduna Amir Mu'awiyah رضي الله عنه, the virtues and merits of all Companions are abundantly recorded in the books of Hadith. Those who bear ill thoughts toward any of them have clearly deviated from the path of truth and moderation.

Important Note

It has come to our attention that an individual falsely associates himself with our esteemed Shaykh Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai رحمه الله and spreads suspicions about the Companions. Let it be clear: such a person has no affiliation with our Shaykh or our institution. We disassociate from such people and their deceitful actions.

O Allah, fill our hearts with love for all the Companions! Ameen.
