Belief in Taqdīr (Divine Decree) is among the fundamental pillars of īmān (faith). Being content with Allah’s decree brings about His pleasure and spiritual closeness. The one who remains satisfied with what Allah has decreed for him reaps immense benefits in both this world and the Hereafter.
Sūrah at-Taghābun (64:11)
"مَا أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ"
Translation:
“No calamity befalls except by the permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah – He guides his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.”
Point:
This verse makes it clear that a believer who accepts Allah’s decree and remains content will receive guidance and peace of heart from Allah ﷻ. Rather than being distressed by trials, he finds contentment through reliance upon Allah.
Sūrah at-Ṭalāq (65:3)
"وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ"
Translation:
“And whoever puts his trust in Allah, He is sufficient for him.”
Point:
The one who is content with divine decree is in reality placing his trust in Allah ﷻ. For such a person, Allah becomes sufficient, makes his affairs easy, and grants him great reward.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"عَجَبًا لِأَمْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِ..."
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2999
Translation:
“Wondrous is the affair of the believer! Verily all his affairs are good for him – and this is only for the believer. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him; and if hardship befalls him, he is patient, and that is also good for him.”
Point:
This ḥadīth affirms that the one who is content with Allah’s decree will succeed in all situations. Gratitude in ease and patience in hardship lead to elevation in ranks and enduring reward.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"إِنَّ اللَّهَ إِذَا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا ابْتَلَاهُمْ..."
Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī: 2396
Translation:
“When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is content (with the test) will have Allah’s pleasure, and whoever is displeased will earn His wrath.”
Point:
This ḥadīth clarifies that contentment with divine decree leads to Allah’s pleasure, while discontent leads to His displeasure. Tests and trials are a means of nearness to Allah, and enduring them with patience and acceptance is the path to divine love and approval.
① Contentment with Taqdīr brings Allah’s pleasure and peace of heart.
② Whoever relies on Allah, He becomes sufficient for him.
③ The patient believer remains successful in all circumstances.
④ Whoever is pleased with Allah’s decree, Allah is pleased with him.
Thus, we must have complete belief in and acceptance of Allah’s decree, in order to attain success in both worlds. Wholeheartedly embracing Allah’s decisions in every situation is the mark of true faith, and this approach leads to prosperity and everlasting success.
