Is it Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the practice of the Companions to wear a cap, turban, or head covering?
It is authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (1358) and Abū Dāwūd (4072, 4077), among other sources, that:
The Prophet ﷺ used to wear a black turban on his blessed head.
Similarly, he tied a white turban on the head of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه.
References for this include:
Mustadrak al-Ḥākim 4/540, 541 (Hadith 8613)
Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn 2/391
Moreover, it is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (1838) that:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrated:
“A man stood and said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
‘O Messenger of Allah! What clothing do you command us to wear in the state of ihrām?’
The Prophet ﷺ replied: ‘Do not wear shirts, trousers, turbans, or caps...’”
From this authentic ḥadīth, it becomes evident that:
✔ The Companions رضی اللہ عنہم used to wear turbans and caps,
✔ However, such clothing was prohibited specifically in the state of iḥrām.
Hence, wearing a turban or cap is established from the Prophet ﷺ and his noble Companions, and acting upon this practice is virtuous and preferable.
Wearing a head covering such as a turban, cap, or cloth is in line with the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the way of the Companions, and is thus recommended and meritorious for Muslim men.
